Hoshiarpur /Daljeet Ajnoha/July 26— The Shrimad Bhagavat Katha being held at Dera Bapu Gangadas Ji, Mahilpur, under the aegis of Bapu Gangadas Ji Welfare Society, concluded today. The discourse, which began at 6:00 pm, featured visiting national saint Param Shraddheya Shri Gor das Ji Maharaj from Vrindavan, who recounted episodes from Lord Krishna’s life to a captivated audience.
Speaking on the story of Govardhan, Maharaj said that after the residents of Braj worshipped Mount Giriraj (Govardhan) and returned home, Indra became enraged and unleashed violent storms and torrential rains. According to the saint, Lord Krishna then lifted the seven-cos-wide Giriraj on his little finger and held it aloft for seven days and seven nights at the age of seven to protect all the residents of Braj.
Maharaj highlighted the moral: while performing worldly duties—business, employment and household responsibilities—if one takes initiation from a true saint or guru and follows disciplined devotional practices, the Lord will shield devotees from suffering and bestow spiritual attainments even in this lifetime.
On cow service, the saint urged everyone to serve cows. If a household cannot keep a cow, he recommended that each family member set aside at least Rs 10 daily and donate the amount to a gaushala for fodder or related needs. He also advised families to drink cow’s milk for the health benefits of children and to earn the merit of protecting cows.
In another episode, Maharaj narrated how Rukmini, having heard about Krishna from sage Narada in childhood, considered him her destined husband. When her brother sought to marry her to an unrighteous demon, Rukmini wrote a letter to Krishna—referred to as the “Rukmini Prem Patrika.” Even today, he said, girls who recite it daily are blessed with their desired match. On their wedding day, after performing a Gauri puja, Rukmini was received by Dwarkadhish, who brought a chariot to take her to Dwaraka; her parents later performed the traditional rites of kanya-daan in Dwaraka.
The Katha venue observed Rukmini’s wedding with great fervour today, complete with band music and a grand procession. Devotional songs sung by Maharaj, including “Dware mere bansuri kaun bajaye” and “Prabhu ji mere le gaye Rukmini har ke,” moved the congregation. Chief sevadars included Mandeep Singh, Vicky, Deepak Sachdeva from Phagwara, Paras, Isha Garg, Manju, Manish, Tilak Raj and members of the Welfare Society. Many devotees danced in devotional ecstasy.
The Katha committee invited all devotees and families to attend the final day’s proceedings, starting at 6:00 pm. A communal langar will be served to all after the programme.
