Hoshiarpur / Daljeet Ajnoha/July 1
Under the chairmanship of President Lion Vijay Arora, Lions Club Hoshiarpur Pearl held a special meeting where water conservation was the primary topic of discussion. Former District Governors Shiv Kumar Sekhri and Harish Banga, along with Lion District Chairperson Pal Singh Banga, were present. All speakers expressed deep concern over rapidly declining groundwater levels, rising water demand, and water crises brought on by climate change, and they urged every member of society to make water conservation part of their daily lives. Measures such as rainwater harvesting, water reuse, stopping leaks, and prudent water use were identified as highly effective steps.
Chairman I Donation and prominent social worker Sanjeev Arora outlined upcoming projects, saying that a tree-planting campaign will be launched during the monsoon season. He added that other initiatives will include providing books to needy students, cleanliness drives, a plastic-free campaign, and various community projects.
Shiv Kumar Sekhri said that every drop of water is precious. He warned that if concrete steps are not taken in time to conserve water, future generations will face a severe water crisis. He urged the mandatory adoption of rainwater harvesting systems in every home, school, office, and industrial establishment. He also called for immediate repairs of dripping taps and damaged pipes to prevent water wastage and emphasized instilling water-saving habits in children.
Harish Banga said water conservation is not merely the government's responsibility but a collective duty of every citizen. He suggested using a bucket instead of a hose to wash vehicles, irrigating gardens in the early morning or evening, reusing water for kitchen and household tasks, and turning off taps that are unnecessarily running. He stressed that small efforts together can bring about significant change.
President Lion Vijay Arora and Sanjeev Arora said involving youth in water-conservation efforts is an urgent need. They called for regular awareness drives, tree-planting, conservation rallies, and rainwater-harvesting programmes through schools, colleges, social organizations, and clubs to foster a lasting culture of water saving. Arora added that Lions Club Hoshiarpur Pearl will continue to run public-awareness campaigns on water conservation. They appealed to all members to adopt simple water-saving measures at their homes and workplaces and to encourage others to do the same.
The meeting concluded with all present pledging to spread the message "Water is Life" to every household and to turn water conservation into a mass movement. Region Chairperson Harjit Bhatia, Rajindra Singh, Avtar Singh and others were also present.
