“Vastu” properly means arranging things in harmony with nature. According to internationally renowned vastu expert and author Dr. Bhupendra Vastu Shastri, every element of a building we live in — including its foundation, auspicious timing (muhurat), layout, constructed units, doors, brahma (central zone), corners, core points, diagonal lines, lineages, string alignments, directions, the five elements, colours, slopes, interior décor and external structures — carries its own significance. He also notes the importance of the thirty-two external deities and the thirteen internal deities associated with a structure.
Dr. Bhupendra emphasises a special ritual in vastu: making offerings through havan and yajna. He says that, as per the boon granted by Lord Brahma, the oblations offered in a vastu yajna secure the blessings of the Vastu Purusha. Alongside these blessings, all the forty-five presiding deities of the dwelling become pleased. Their favour, he adds, brings prosperity, peace, and the steady presence of Goddess Lakshmi in the household. The idea is summed up in the old saying: “A single worship yields forty-five blessings; the foundation is purified and the Lord is pleased.”
