Residents of Bassi Ghulam Hussain village in Hoshiarpur had been protesting for 77 days against the closure of their main village road due to a highway construction project. They had written to the government, but received no resolution until Shiromani Akali Dal national vice-president Sanjeev Talwar learned of it and brought the matter to former Union Minister of State Vijay Sampla, who quickly resolved it. The villagers ended their sit-in and expressed gratitude to both Sampla and Talwar.Village farmer leader Aman, sarpanch Sakhjinder Singh, panch Parveen Saini, panch Gurvinder Singh, panch Sarbjeet Singh, panch Manjeet Singh, former panch Balbir Singh, advocate Sanjeev Kumar, former panch Surinder Bama, Piare Lal, Karnail Singh, Daljeet, Amritpal, and others explained that a 16.5-foot-wide road from their village connects to the Kandi Canal service road and serves as the main drainage route for rainwater due to its lower level. However, the highway authority was blocking this road, which would cause major future issues for residents and lead to flooding during monsoons. This forced them into the protest, but Talwar immediately informed Sampla, who visited the site, summoned highway officials, spoke with senior officers over the phone, and secured agreement for an underpass. This provides major relief to the villagers, who thanked Sampla and Talwar profusely.Vijay Sampla, who arrived at the scene, stated that the central government is running many projects for national progress and public convenience, including this highway. He assured that any issues arising from such work would be resolved on priority so no ordinary villager or farmer suffers. He committed to addressing any future problems and instructed highway authority officials to complete the project while considering people's issues, noting it's easier to fix problems during construction than after completion. On this occasion, Sanjeev Talwar thanked Sampla for taking the matter seriously and resolving it, while assuring villagers he would always stand with them for any issues during the project.
