In an inspiring act of social service, the family of 94-year-old retired Block Primary Education Officer (BPEO) Kishor Chand of Garhshankar has donated his mortal remains to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI), Chandigarh, in accordance with his last wish. The donation was made in the presence of Dr. Tarsem Singh, Chairman of the Body Donation Committee, and members of the Rotary Eye and Corneal Transplant Society.A resident of Ward No. 13, Garhshankar, Kishor Chand had executed a will in 2006 pledging his body for medical research. His sons, Principal Jagdish Rai and SDO Balwinder Singh, stated that their father’s wish has now been honored by donating his body to PGI for scientific and educational use.Dr. Tarsem Singh informed that individuals who pledge body donation should ensure their families deliver the body to the anatomy department of the designated hospital within three to five hours after death. He noted that such donations are invaluable for medical education, research, and training, aiding students of anatomy, medicine, and dentistry. Donated skin tissue, he added, also plays a crucial role in treating severely burnt patients.Appealing to the public, Dr. Singh urged more people to take a pledge for organ and body donation during their lifetime. He emphasized that the light from donated eyes can restore vision to the blind, while full body donations advance medical research and education, ultimately benefitting humanity.Members of the Rotary Eye and Corneal Transplant Society, Garhshankar Unit—including President Lakhwinder Kumar, Cashier Rajan Malhan, Secretary Omkar Singh Chahalpuri, and General Secretary Harikishan Gangad—commended the family’s noble gesture and lauded their commitment to fulfilling the deceased’s humanitarian pledge.
