— Kartar Singh Sarabha, the young Ghadar movement hero who sacrificed his life for India’s freedom at just 19, was remembered on his birth anniversary. Attendees paid homage to his extraordinary and invaluable contribution to the independence struggle made at a tender age.
Born to Sardar Mangal Singh and Sahib Kaur, Kartar Singh spent his childhood under their care and was later lovingly raised by his grandfather Sardar Badan Singh. After receiving primary education, he went to the United States for further studies. Influenced by the Ghadar activists and driven by patriotism, he returned to India to fight for independence. He worked to inspire Indian soldiers stationed in cantonments to join the revolt against British rule. However, betrayal by informers prevented the planned uprising from succeeding. The British government sentenced Kartar Singh Sarabha and his associates to death, but their fierce rebellion and ideals could not be extinguished.
Punjabis across the world observe his birth anniversary each year to honor the great national martyr. A commemorative event was also held in Nangal Khilarian, where participants paid respects to martyrs who have stood as guardians of humanity during troubled times. Those present included Talwinder Singh Heer, district publicity secretary of Bhakiyu Ekta Ugrahan, Malkit Singh, Jatinder Singh, Sukhvinder Singh, Aakash Kapoor, Pappi Banga, Surinder Kaur Sahota, Rajvinder Kaur and Jaspreet Kaur.
